Speech of April 15, 1948

Citizens of Buenos Aires,

Today, we are standing here in the city center; the city in which many of us have grown up in, but many more have moved to from the rural, surrounding towns. Many more have come from other countries such as Italy and Spain. We have all come together on this beautiful spring day, the fifteenth of April, 1948. The point of today is to hear about the new type of progress that has been made on our nation. There have been many changes to better our nation and to make it more developed like the rest of the world, but to also create an individual nation, with distinctive characteristics to make us stand out.

We are finally seeing moves and decisions in order benefit us, the majority of the population, the working class. We have been suffering for many years because we were not the pure white, urban individuals whom comprised the governmental system. We have seen many conflicting ideas such as the idea of liberalism being pushed on to our nation, along with caudillismo. There have been many conflicts between the Church and the young generation of citizens coming from the French and English.

Finally, we, the working class, are being recognized and acknowledged for our hard work. It is becoming easier to live in this nation with this governmental identity of positivism. Thanks to President Perón, our economic policies are being expanded. He has implemented the policy of ISI, Import Substitution Industrialization. With this our economy is becoming more independent from the rest of the world. Because of the reliance on other nations, especially in the rest of Latin America and Europe, our nation was becoming too reliant on other sources. With fewer imports, President Perón tells us that we are creating more jobs and benefits for many more citizens no matter what the population.

Economic improvements are also prevalent through our wages. From 1947 to 1948 our wages have increased by twenty-five percent. President Perón has been a great leader for us. Thanks to his wife as well, Evita, we, as women were just given the right to vote last year. I think I speak for everyone when I say that this has been a large turning point for our nation and the move toward modernization. I am speaking as a woman today. I am speaking out about the rights that we have been granted. Just last year in 1947 we women are now part of the suffrage of Argentina. We are now part of the elections and the decisions of electing governmental leaders. It is our voice that will be heard. It is our voices that are starting to be listened to and acknowledged.

Just the other day, I was talking with a few of my husband’s friends. I knew our society was starting to change when they acknowledged my opinion. The men, although maybe did not agree with everything that I was saying, gave me attention, and listened to what I had to say. It was then that I realized the course our nation is taking to become a better place. We now can look at ourselves and our fellow citizens to form opinions and leadership positions to run our society, rather than from those of Europe or the United States of America. We are our own leaders and we, as Argentines know what is best for our country. We do not need to rely on other countries. That is a symbol against independence of populism.

We the people are now the national identity of Argentina and Buenos Aires. Now that the foundation of our nation has been laid, we can focus on giving more equal opportunities, fairer wages, and more equal responsibilities. President Perón is ready to support all of us, especially of the working class. He is ready to lead us towards a better education and more rights for women. We have a great, caring leader capable of leading us to greatness and equality. I hope that everyone will consider the changes and progress of our nation as a positive thing, something more open and equal for all of us.

Thank you; I am Carolina Garcia.
