Plantation Owners of Brazil, 1890

As my fellow plantation owners and I continue to strive in Brazil we are still always trying to advance our operations in any way possible. The idea that keeps coming up in our discussions for a better functioning plantation is eugenics. Many of our slaves we are obtaining from Africa are frail and have been affected by disease. We also noticed a large group of strong, hard working slaves that show potential in their working habits. We feel that if we group these particular slaves together in a community their growth would be astronomical and highly beneficially. This would allow us to produce efficient workers for our plantations and would be profitable on the slave trade market. We propose a plan that will change the way plantations run from here on.

We also think very highly of our leader, he brought all of us together and introduced this idea to us. His name is Enrique Ramos and he was inspired by Charles Darwin and his theories about human evolution. He agreed with the idea that since many human communities and societies sought to protect the weak, those groups were considered the odds with the natural selection and was to be extinct. Only then can we have a superior society and we have a weekly meeting at his plantation to discuss further future plans. We speak about a higher race of blacks and we believe that one day there will be a generation of advanced slaves. Slaves that will be strong and very effective workers on the plantations, and they will hopefully be able to join society with the rest of us. We believe that one day slaves all of Brazil will be of a higher race of slaves.

As the plantation owners of Brazil, we strive to achieve our goal in making a superior society where we are all equal. They are the minority group and we are they majority group, we want them to become more integrated. Also, we want to get as many plantation owners as we can to join our movement toward a better plantation environment.

  1. I would like to point out that the slave trade stopped in 1850, and that slavery in Brazil was abolished in 1888s. While your application of Eugenics is very appropriate, modern ideas in the year 1890 would see slavery as out of date and old-fashioned.
