Band of Sisters
The famous Doctor Renaldo has finally taken a side for the decision on a healthier society, a healthier Argentina. He has come down on the side of a women’s group that was started by low class women of all things. It was surprising for a man of his stature to take a stand for lower class women. Being a woman myself, and a reporter, it is nice to see something like this happening. A man and a doctor is deciding to help women below his social station, not for money or notoriety, but for the greater good of a healthy Argentina.
The two women who started this organization, a lower class woman named Maria who lost her child soon after birth and Taylor a woman of ill repute who has a venereal disease, are in an excellent spirits. They are overjoyed to have a doctor that is genuinely interested in their plight. “We are happy to have a doctor who is on our side, and such a famous doctor at that” they have been quoted to say when they were interviewed by the reporter. I asked about the rumors that they have traded themselves for money and support. Surprisingly, they did not throw me out. Maria said she had never been unfaithful to her husband. Taylor said that was she used to do for a living, but since she got her disease, she has not done anything of that nature since. They then turned some questions to me. They asked me what it was like for me to be a woman and a reporter in a male dominated profession. I will admit, it was an interesting question. I never really thought about it before. Most of the men that I work with are actually quite civil towards me; and I have had few problems with harassment. But there are always the men that don’t get the message no matter how many times the editor tells them. I hold my own, I told them.
Doctor Renaldo was not available for comment, but sent a letter to me saying that it was good that this was being documented, not for himself, but for future Argentineans. This is history he told me, and that I was a part of it.
This is Elena Ramirez for the Buenos Aires Herald.
Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I want to thank you for publishing our society's ideas. I am very encouraged that you have faith in us. Additionally, I am flattered that you describe me as a "man of stature." The truth is, I am simply a young doctor taking a gamble that I can become famous. I hope you can help us. Consider joining our society or at least continue chronicaling our journey together. Thank you kindly.
Sincerly,
Dr. Renaldo
